Galveston Wharves Proclaims 2025 Bicentennial Year

The Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees proclaimed 2025 the Bicentennial Year for the Port of Galveston at its Dec. 17 board meeting. The port is planning a full year of activities to highlight and celebrate the port’s 200-year history. Visit www.portofgalveston200.com for details.

PORT OF GALVESTON BICENTENNIAL PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, the Mexican government designated the Port of Galveston as a provisional port and custom entry point on October 17, 1825, when the region was under Mexican rule; and

WHEREAS, the port has played vital commercial and military roles throughout the history of Galveston, Texas and the United States; and

WHEREAS, by 1899, the deepwater port was the world’s foremost cotton port and a major U.S. commercial center, and

WHEREAS, in 1940, the citizens of Galveston voted to buy the privately held port properties to become a self-sustaining city entity, which it remains today; and

WHEREAS, the 840-acre port is the fourth most popular U.S. cruise port and a thriving commercial center with infrastructure and assets to serve growing cruise, cargo and commercial businesses.

NOW, THEREFORE, the Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees proclaims 2025 as the 200th anniversary of the Port of Galveston, with a full year of activities to celebrate the port’s history, as well as contributions by the port and its port partners to a strong and vibrant economy.
